Career

Together with his brother, Niels van Straten, he transformed the family business 'Van Straten Medical' into a circular company that focused on making circular products and providing circular services for healthcare. In 2018, Bart focused on scientific research and joined Tim Horeman's research line 'Sustainable Surgery & Translational Technology' at TU Delft. He started PhD research at the BioMechanical Engineering department of the Mechanical Engineering faculty in Delft. His PhD research focused on circular reuse of hospital waste as a raw material for products.

After completing the Graduate School at TU Delft and his research period, he obtained his doctorate. During his PhD research, Bart founded the GreenCycl (FieldLab). This FieldLab grew into a leading institute where research is conducted into the reuse of (medical) waste. He and his team managed to certify the first medical product in the world made from hospital waste.

During the corona period, Bart and his team discovered a method to make disposable face masks reusable several times by re sterilizing them. His method was adopted by hospitals around the world during the corona shortages. In addition, he and his research team discovered millions of unsafe face masks that were placed on the European market through 'particle measurements'.

After research in nineteen hospitals, only a third of the 140 million tested face masks turned out to be safe enough. After obtaining the University Teaching Qualification (UTQ)/Basic Teaching Qualification (BKO), Bart became active as a lecturer at TU Delft.

His latest book 'Creating a Circular Healthcare', written with Letizia Alvino and Tim Horeman, is seen as a guideline for applying circular strategies in healthcare. She also developed the online MOOC course program 'Circular Strategies for Sustainable Healthcare'.
